 Water Harvesting in the Hotels
13 July 2001

Reference is invited to Hotel Association of India’s letter No. 98/HAI/600/58 dated June 21, 2001 inviting participation by nominees of member hotels in a Seminar held under the aegis of the Ministry of Tourism on 26th June 2001 at the ITC Maurya Sheraton Hotel, New Delhi. The Seminar was well attended by a large cross section of hotel Executives including the GMs and Engineering personnel. The Central Ground Water Board made a presentation in the Seminar outlining the need for Water Harvesting and recommended measures applicable to hotel projects.  The major action areas for hotel industry identified at the Seminar were the following:

a) Rooftop rain water harvesting : Storing of rain water collected from rooftop in a ground water reservoir for further use. Investment on the structures required for harvesting rainwater is negligible, simple to execute and eco-friendly.

b) Artificial recharge to ground water : Harvesting rain water and artificial recharging is a process by which ground water level / reservoir is augmented. Such projects can be undertaken by (i) Constructing recharging pits refilled with sand pebbles and boulders, (ii) Construction of recharge trench of shallow depth across the landscape, (iii) Activating a dry / abandoned dug well serving as recharge structure. Investment on such projects is minimal.

c) Water re-circulation plant : for re-cycling water for internal use, cleaning and gardening / horticulture purposes etc.

A copy of the guidelines for Water Harvesting Measures and Techniques issued by the Central Ground Water Board, Government of India, is enclosed for information and necessary action.
